In today's competitive retail environment, carton packaging does more than protect a product. It plays a vital role in attracting customers, strengthening your brand and influencing purchasing decisions.
Whether your products are displayed on supermarket shelves, in retail stores or shipped directly to customers, your packaging is often the first thing people notice.
Packaging design has become an essential part of modern product marketing. Every carton is an opportunity to tell your brand's story. From the moment a customer sees the packaging on a shelf to the moment they open it at home, the carton acts as a silent brand ambassador.
Think about how it feels to walk into a shop and see packaging on the shelf which really grabs your attention. You want to explore it, see what it is and maybe even purchase it!
Effective packaging captures your attention in a crowded marketplace. It reflects the quality of the product inside, strengthening brand recognition. It can also build trust with customers. And ultimately, it can encourage impulse purchases.
Shelf appeal has never been more important. Colour consistency, premium print quality and thoughtful design all influence purchasing decisions. We're seeing brands invest more in packaging that reflects their identity: bold, vibrant colours to signal energy and wellbeing, or clean, minimalist design for a premium feel. More and more, food manufacturers are thinking carefully about colour psychology and how it shapes customer perception.
Customers expect every carton to look exactly like the last one. Whether producing hundreds or millions of cartons, maintaining colour consistency across every production run helps protect the brand. For any established brand, colour is not a small detail. It is a key part of brand recognition. If the same product appears on the shelf in different shades from one batch to the next, it can undermine shelf impact, weaken brand identity, and create the impression of inconsistent quality.
One of our customers asked us to help them with a better shelf presence for their freezer food product. Their current food product was located in the chest freezers of main supermarkets but we advised them to acquire space on the shelf freezers within the supermarket, to enable better space presence and more visibility.
We then redesigned the packaging to stand up within the shelf freezers, rather than the flat-lying packaging for the chest freezers.
We reworked the packaging design and artwork to accompany the new space. The result gave them far greater shelf presence, with more eye-catching artwork and an eyelevel positioning within the supermarket. In addition, the new profile meant more cartons could fit on the shelf, in the same area (as they were redesigned to be cubed), meaning cost per carton space on shelf was kept to a minimum.

Kingston Carton has an in-house Arthouse & Design Studio (pictured, above), so we can do strong design in house, as well as create the carton (plus store and deliver!).
Our in-house Artwork & Design Studio is where every project begins. From the very first concept sketch to a fully engineered, print-ready design, our technical team plays a crucial role in making sure packaging not only looks good, but performs exactly as it needs to.
When we’re thinking about ensuring a product stands out on the shelf, we make sure that a well-designed carton can:
People are sharing posts showcasing products they are using. And for so many reasons, you should always be prepared. Whether it is someone’s personal branding, a way of sharing their values, sharing their hobbies via showing what they are doing, or asking online communities what they think of products; it’s endless!
“We’ve seen an increase in customers wanting products to look not only good enough to stand out on the shelf, but also be interesting enough to be shared on social media,” says Robert Fish, Estimator at Kingston Carton.
“This means we are thinking more about the story the packaging tells; for example, what feeling do the colours give, is the typography clear? The typography used, the structure of the carton. All helps to alter people’s thoughts on the product.”
For any established brand, colour is not a small detail. It is a key part of brand recognition. And we recommend paying extra attention to an eye-catching design (think colour, texture, unique images etc). One health food client of ours wanted their packaging to represent energy and healthy living, so we helped them use bright, uplifting colours that pop on the shelf. For a smoothie manufacturer, we created a carton range with vibrant colours reflecting the fruits inside each product. At the premium end, we've produced high-end chocolate boxes finished with foiling, embossing and multiple varnishes for a luxury feel. It all depends on the product, but standing out is essential.
Brands which take colour consistency seriously include the famous Veuve Clicquot Champagne House in Reims, famous for their ‘orange’ coloured branded Champagne. They have a special pantone colour made to a particular mix, to keep their brand colour consistent on their packaging. Their Champagne house also sells mugs referencing their own special pantone colour; a great example of taking brand colour seriously!
QR codes for customers to scan for more info, augmented reality (people being able to interact with their packaging via apps which create characters, products, show what spaces look like, for example), games and more are becoming popular.
Brands are connecting products with consumers via digital experiences making the packing informative and is a way of differentiating products on the shelf and creating additional marketing opportunities for brands.
Sustainability is also now seen as a design feature. We're seeing brands use packaging to reinforce their values. Many are moving towards natural, "kraft" finishes so the packaging communicates sustainability before a customer even picks the product up, particularly for organic, vegan and eco-conscious brands. We recently worked with an eco-friendly laundry brand to make their carton packaging fully recyclable, matching sustainable packaging to a sustainable product.
