Food packaging has to work hard. Manufacturers are under pressure to balance sustainability with performance, stand out on shelf, run efficient operations and keep up with fast-changing consumer demand.
As a customer, you need a partner who can manufacture packaging that does all of this at once; protecting your product, strengthening your brand, supporting your sustainability goals and keeping pace with an increasingly competitive market.
At Kingston Carton, we've been manufacturing carton packaging for more than a century, producing over 350 million cartons a year for customers across the UK. That gives us a front-row seat to how the industry is changing. Here are five trends we're seeing, and why they matter when choosing a carton packaging manufacturer.
1. Sustainability is a priority but performance still comes first
Sustainability dominates conversations across the food industry. Consumers want brands that reduce plastic, use responsibly sourced materials and make packaging easier to recycle.
But balancing sustainability with performance is a design challenge, not just a materials one. It means looking at the board, the structure, the print and finish, the packing process, the supply chain and the end use together. A carton still has to protect the product, run smoothly on the packing line, survive storage and distribution, and look great on the shelf. If cutting material leads to crushed cartons, damaged products or downtime, any environmental gain is quickly cancelled out.
We work with customers to review the whole specification; board selection, structural design, print finishes, logistics and the product itself. Sometimes a small design change reduces material use. Other times, the right board grade improves machine performance and cuts product damage, delivering environmental and commercial benefits together.
We're seeing brands use packaging to reinforce their values. Many are moving towards natural, "kraft" finishes so the packaging communicates sustainability before a customer even picks the product up, particularly for organic, vegan and eco-conscious brands. We recently worked with an eco-friendly laundry brand to make their carton packaging fully recyclable, matching sustainable packaging to a sustainable product.

2. Right-sizing packaging delivers commercial benefits
One of the biggest shifts we're seeing is towards smarter, more efficient carton design. Packaging that fits the product, not one that's oversized "just in case" or too tight to protect it properly.
Bigger isn't better. Oversized cartons waste material, eat into pallet space and push up transport and storage costs. Too small, and they won't protect the product or perform consistently on the line.
We worked with a customer supplying donuts to a leading supermarket who needed to cut costs. By slightly reducing board thickness and tightening the format, we fitted more boxes onto a single sheet, delivering cost savings, without compromising the product.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Our design and technical teams work with each customer to strike the right balance between protection, presentation and efficiency.

3. Shelf appeal has never been more important
Walk into any supermarket and you can see how competitive food retail has become. Own-label ranges keep expanding, and challenger brands are entering almost every category. Packaging has become one of the most powerful marketing tools a brand has.
Colour consistency, premium print quality and thoughtful design all influence purchasing decisions. We're seeing brands invest more in packaging that reflects their identity: bold, vibrant colours to signal energy and wellbeing, or clean, minimalist design for a premium feel. More and more, food manufacturers are thinking carefully about colour psychology and how it shapes customer perception.
One health food client of ours wanted their packaging to represent energy and healthy living, so we helped them use bright, uplifting colours that pop on the shelf. For a smoothie manufacturer, we created a carton range with vibrant colours reflecting the fruits inside each product. At the premium end, we've produced high-end chocolate boxes finished with foiling, embossing and multiple varnishes for a luxury feel. It all depends on the product, but standing out is essential.
Customers expect every carton to look exactly like the last one. Whether producing hundreds or millions of cartons, maintaining colour consistency across every production run helps protect the brand. For any established brand, colour is not a small detail. It is a key part of brand recognition. If the same product appears on the shelf in different shades from one batch to the next, it can undermine shelf impact, weaken brand identity, and create the impression of inconsistent quality.
4. Supply chain performance is shaping packaging decisions
We're seeing more customers focus on supply chain performance as a critical part of their business, and increasingly looking for packaging partners who can support storage, stock management and reliable delivery.
We run our own fleet of vehicles with our own drivers, book deliveries around what customers need, and use approved hauliers to cover deliveries beyond our own network across England. Customers want a partner who can store product effectively, maximise pallet space, and understand their production schedule closely enough to deliver exactly when it's needed.
With on-site warehousing, flexible call-off orders and a dedicated delivery fleet, our logistics team works closely with customers to schedule deliveries around production, reducing storage pressure while making sure packaging is always available when it's needed. For one customer, we produce more than 50 products at varying quantities, delivering small amounts of each twice a week so they have flexibility depending on which lines are running. Managing more of the process ourselves gives customers greater control, reliability and responsiveness and for manufacturers on demanding schedules, that peace of mind is invaluable.
5. Flexibility is becoming a competitive advantage
The food industry moves fast. Launches get brought forward, seasonal demand shifts unexpectedly, retailers revise forecasts, artwork changes, legislation lands, and customer expectations evolve. Increasingly, manufacturers want packaging suppliers who can respond to change quickly, not just on turnaround times, but with the knowledge, experience and production capability to adapt when circumstances shift.
Whether it's handling varying order volumes, supporting a new product launch or solving an unexpected packaging problem, businesses want a supplier who works with them to get it done.
Along our 100 year journey, we have learned that with our dedicated, talented team, we can adapt when we need to! Every customer is different. Listening carefully, asking the right questions and understanding the bigger picture allows us to recommend packaging solutions that continue to work as businesses grow and evolve.
