Choosing a Carton Packaging Supplier? Why an Artwork & Design Studio Matters

One of the biggest factors in getting packaging right is the expertise behind the design itself.

Our in-house Artwork & Design Studio is where every project begins. From the very first concept sketch to a fully engineered, print-ready design, our technical team plays a crucial role in making sure packaging not only looks good, but performs exactly as it needs to.

Meet Steve (pictured above), our Technical Studio Manager, to find out more about our Artwork & Design Studio and why it is so important when you are choosing your carton supplier.

What Does a Technical Studio Manager Do?

I create the first carton concept, through to a fully engineered, print-ready design. That might sound straightforward, but there's a huge amount of technical thinking involved along the way.

For every carton, the studio has to consider how it opens, how it closes, how it protects the product inside, how it sits on a shelf, and how efficiently it can be manufactured. This is especially true for food and confectionery packaging, where it involves a huge amount of technical problem solving that most people never see!

The team is constantly working through questions such as:

  • How do we stop the product from shifting during transit?
  • How does the carton run on a filling line at speed, without jamming?
  • Will the glue hold up under different storage conditions?
  • Can the packaging be recycled?
  • Is the material sourced from a sustainable, certified forest (such as FSC or PEFC)?

To answer these questions, we use specialist structural design software, including ArtiosCAD and ArtPro, to build 3D models and cutter guides.

Physical samples are then produced so the design can be tested properly before it ever goes near a production line.

What Does It Take to Create Packaging That Works?

From a structural point of view, 'works' means the carton needs to perform on every level.

This means it needs to:

  • Protect the product throughout the supply chain, including crush resistance, cushioning for fragile items, and keeping products fresh
  • Run reliably on the client's packing or filling machinery
  • Stand out on the shelf
  • Be cost-effective to produce and ship
  • Meet sustainability and recyclability requirements
  • Survive real-world handling - being dropped, stacked, and opened by a consumer.

Getting all of that right takes years of hands-on experience with materials, board weights, grain direction, coatings, print and finishing processes, and manufacturing constraints. It's the difference between a design that looks great on screen and one that performs in a factory and on a shelf. That's why sampling and testing are non-negotiable: you learn things from a physical sample that you simply can't see on a computer.

Our Advice for Businesses Ordering Carton Packaging for the First Time

For anyone new to working with carton packaging suppliers, come to us early, and come with as much information as you can; not just a finished design idea!

The earlier structural design gets involved, the more we can optimise for cost, sustainability, and shelf performance before decisions get locked in.

To help the process run smoothly, it helps enormously if you can tell us:

  • Exact product dimensions and weight, including any variation across sizes
  • Whether the packaging will be filled by hand or on an automated line
  • Expected shelf life and any environmental sensitivities, such as moisture, light, or temperature
  • Order volumes, so the right print and finishing process can be recommended
  • Any known retailer packaging or sustainability requirements

And don't be afraid to ask for multiple prototypes before committing to a production run! A physical sample in your hands will tell you more in five minutes than any digital file you see on a screen. It's the cheapest insurance policy in the whole process.

The Best Part of the Job? Watching Ideas Become Reality!

There's a real moment of truth when a flat sheet folds into a working carton for the first time. When the structure clicks together exactly as intended, and you can hand someone a physical object that started as just an idea and some scribbling.

For unusually shaped products, this becomes even more rewarding. Designing a locking mechanism or a reusable closure, and then seeing it work smoothly in someone's hands, is a genuinely satisfying part of the process.

Why an In-House Artwork Studio Makes All the Difference

Our Artwork Studio sits on site, alongside our technical and production teams. This means customers don't need to go through a third party for design work; there's just one clear line of communication from start to finish.

This joined-up approach brings a number of real benefits:

  • Faster turnaround on designs, approvals, and production
  • Fewer artwork errors, thanks to close collaboration between teams
  • One point of contact throughout the entire process
  • Reduced production delays
  • Better compliance with retailer and regulatory requirements
  • Improved colour consistency across print runs
  • Easier management of multiple stock items
  • More flexibility for product launches and last-minute changes

Because our Artwork team works closely with other departments every day, approvals move faster and technical issues get resolved early. When a carton profile is signed off by the studio, our technical team has already seen the design, so pricing and production can move forward quickly and efficiently.

Communication is so important, and we have a great process in-house. That expertise under one roof doesn't just make life easier for our team, it benefits our customers too, with faster access to information, quicker samples, and a smoother overall experience.

Why This Matters When Choosing Between Carton Suppliers

More and more businesses are looking for a complete service rather than piecing together design, artwork, and production separately. Delays in artwork approval can hold up entire product launches, and brands increasingly need fast, reliable updates throughout the process.

Because Kingston Carton has the full team in-house, design through to production, we're able to keep things moving without unnecessary back-and-forth between third parties. Everything happens under one roof, with one team who understands the full picture.
